More information

The Juglans regia, commonly known as the common walnut, is a deciduous tree of medium size with a majestic habit, cultivated for both its hard and homogeneous wood and its oil-rich fruits, the walnuts. It is a wide and dense tree, with a short trunk and large, strong, twisted, spreading, and highly branched branches. The medium green leaves appear in May and consist of smooth-edged ovate leaflets. The fruits appear in September-October. A widespread countryside species in our region, it prefers full sunlight and requires a rich, deep, well-drained soil with enough moisture for good fruiting. It tolerates clay and limestone very well. Hardy below -20°C (-4°F), it nonetheless prefers mild climates and the hot, dry air of the continental climate. Unable to tolerate competition and inhibiting the growth of other species, it is a very beautiful tree to plant in isolation, in the middle of a large short grass meadow.

Description

The Juglans regia, also known as the common walnut tree, is a deciduous tree of medium size with a majestic habit, cultivated for its hard and homogeneous wood as well as its oil-rich fruits, the walnuts. It is a broad and dense tree, with a short trunk and large, twisted, spreading, and highly branched branches. The medium green leaves, measuring 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in), appear in May and consist of large and numerous ovate leaflets with smooth edges. The fruits appear in October. A countryside species widespread in our regions, it prefers full sunlight and requires a rich, deep, well-drained soil with enough moisture for good fruiting. It tolerates clay and limestone very well. Hardy down to -20°C, it still prefers mild climates and the hot, dry air of the continental climate. Not tolerating competition and inhibiting the growth of other species, it is a beautiful tree to plant in isolation, in the middle of a large meadow.

The Juglans regia is a majestic tree that requires space. No planting is possible below its canopy, as few plants can withstand its competition. The walnut, ready for harvesting in October, is large and oval with a soft shell. It is very good for drying, but it is even better when fresh. This variety bears fruit quite late, so expect about ten years before your first harvest.

Walnut trees in general prefer cool and deep but well-drained soils, as they are sensitive to stagnant moisture as well as prolonged droughts. A harsh winter can limit its fruiting and weaken the tree.

Planting and care

Plant your Walnut tree in a sunny and isolated location with deep and rich soil. It can tolerate limestone and clay, but prefers loose soils to extend its roots. Therefore, prepare a nice planting hole enriched with humus and a little gravel. Make sure to water your walnut tree during periods of drought in the first few years. You can optionally add well-decomposed compost at its base in autumn. During the first 5 years, promote the formation of 3 or 4 main branches, resulting in a goblet-shaped habit, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. Then, every 3 years, remove dead wood and poorly positioned branches (growing inward or obstructing other shoots). After pruning, the use of a healing balm will help the tree. Harvesting takes place in October. To dry your walnuts, spread them out in a well-ventilated area to reduce the risk of mold on the kernels. Green walnuts can also be harvested in June, on St. John's Day, for making walnut wine.
