Description
The variegated cat grass, with its Latin name Hordeum vulgare variegated, is actually a variety of barley that combines the decorative aspect of its variegated foliage, green with white undersides, with its usefulness for the health of your cat. Barley contains vitamins and fibre that are necessary for a cat's diet.
By licking themselves, cats ingest large amounts of hair. With its purgative properties, cat grass helps cats eliminate ingested hair through regurgitation.
The rapid growth of Hordeum vulgare variegated (6 weeks) allows for the production of healthy vegetation for your cat almost all year round. Regular access to cat grass will prevent your cat from being tempted by your houseplants, which can be toxic to them.
You can easily grow cat grass indoors, behind a window.
A few seeds sown in the garden will yield a beautiful ornamental grass that reaches 60cm (24in) in height and 40cm (16in) in width.

Planting and care
Sow cat grass all year round in a pot. Use good quality soil. Scatter your seeds. Cover the seeds by sprinkling soil on top or using vermiculite, lightly press down and water generously with a fine rain. Place your tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 15°C (59°F) to 20°C (68°F).
Seed germination will take 14 to 21 days. After about 6 weeks, the plants will reach a height of 15cm (6in). You can then make them available for your cat. Sow your seeds in a staggered manner, every 2 weeks, to have pots ready for consumption regularly.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
