Description

Limonium sinuatum 'Forever Silver' is a selection of the Sinuate-leafed Statice that produces large panicles of pure white, tiny but countless flowers. It is a frost-tender perennial plant grown as an annual, native to the Mediterranean. Its papery-textured flowers lighten up flower beds and floral arrangements like few plants can. Highly prized in fresh or dried bouquets, they retain their colour for a long time. Annual statice thrives in sunny, well-drained, light soil that is not too dry in summer.

Limonium sinuatum 'Forever Silver' (synonym Statice sinuata), commonly known as Sinuate-leafed Statice, is derived from a Mediterranean herbaceous plant in the Plumbaginaceae family. This bushy species has an upright and somewhat stiff habit. The 'Forever Silver' cultivar forms flowering clumps 70cm tall and 30cm in diameter. The plant develops a dense basal rosette composed of lanceolate, deeply undulate, bright green, deciduous leaves. From July to September, winged flowering stems appear, branched and adorned with a few small leaves, which bear clusters of 8 to 10cm, consisting of tiny flowers with bracts that have a perfect white papery texture. The flower itself is much more discreet, almost invisible. The flowering is nectariferous. The fruit is a capsule containing a single seed. This plant readily self-seeds in light soil.

Sinuate-leafed statice is undoubtedly one of the easiest flowers to dry, simply cut the longest possible stems, hang them upside down in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. They retain their colors for a long time, which soften slightly. 'Forever Silver' statice also helps to lighten up flower beds alongside more massive blooms (roses, peonies, etc.). Statice can be paired with pink yarrows and Russian sages, for example.

Planting and care

Sow the 'Forever Silver' Statice seeds in February/March in a greenhouse, mini-greenhouse, or heated room, at home, on the surface of good potting soil and cover with vermiculite or a thin layer of potting soil. Germination takes 7 to 14 days at 18-24°C.

Transplant the sufficiently developed young plants into pots, spacing them 5 cm apart, at a slightly lower temperature. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting them in the ground, after the last frost, in deep, well-drained soil. Space the plants 30cm apart.

Statice plants are truly easy to grow. They appreciate the sun, well-drained, sandy, and dry soil. They tolerate salt spray and strong winds, making them perfect candidates for coastal gardens. Planting is done in spring, on warmed soil. Once in place, simply remove the faded flowers, as this stimulates the emergence of new flowers. At the end of the season, if you wish to try preserving Statice, cut back the stems.

Like many Mediterranean plants, Statice is highly drought-resistant, but it needs water to flower well in summer. In its native region, it blooms before the arrival of summer drought. This plant does not appreciate humidity, as it becomes susceptible to Botrytis, grey mould.
