Description

The Nymphaea 'Texas Dawn' is a large water lily perfect for large ponds. Its star-shaped flowers rise 25 cm above the water from May to September and even October. They measure about fifteen centimetres in diameter and are yellow with a pink tint at the base. Their lemon-scented fragrance will surprise you. This hardy aquatic plant can be planted in the sun, submerged in 40 to 90 cm of water directly in the mud, a basket, or a container.

The hybrid water lily 'Texas Dawn' is a horticultural creation by Ken Landon (USA) dating back to 1990, named in homage to the state of Texas. It is one of the most beautiful yellow water lilies! From the Nymphaeaceae family, it is a perennial aquatic plant with deciduous foliage. Its floating leaves appear in spring. They are large, reaching 20 to 23 cm in diameter. They are quite round, green, and dotted with purple. The plant, particularly vigorous, spreads over 1.5 to 1.80 m. It is a particularly floriferous variety. Its flowers constantly repeat from May until September and even October. The flowers rise about 25 cm above the water level. They measure 15 to 20 cm in diameter and emit a pleasant fragrance. The corollas open during the day and close at night. Its petals are rather long and thin, yellow with a pink tint at the base, surrounding a golden yellow stamen. Each flower lives for 4 to 5 days before wilting and being replaced by a new one.

This water lily, 'Texas Dawn', floriferous and vigorous, is perfect for large bodies of water. It is hardy as long as its rhizome and the surrounding water do not freeze in winter. It blooms for long weeks, from late spring to early autumn. It is also an essential aquatic plant for maintaining the balance of a water feature, as it contributes to water oxygenation. Its floating leaves provide shade and shelter for fish and a platform for dragonflies and amphibians. Along the edges of your water feature, combine the yellow flowers of your Water Lily with blue-flowered Japanese Irises like 'Activity' or 'Illumination'. Add verticality and originality to the ensemble with Equisetum hyemale or Juncus effusus Spiralis.

Planting and care

The rootstock of the Nymphaea 'Texas Dawn' cep should be planted a few centimetres deep, at a depth of 40 to 90 cm of water. Hardy water lilies tolerate winter harshness better if the pond depth is at least 50 cm. The water should not freeze at the depth at which they are planted. In shallow ponds, planting in a container is possible. In this case, the rootstocks in damp sand are protected from frost in winter. Plant them in good garden soil, preferably rich, by inserting them vertically until the collar. Avoid using horticultural compost, which is too rich. Planting the rootstocks in a basket about 40 cm wide is also possible. Sink the basket in the desired location and weight it if necessary. Plant your rootstocks promptly after receiving them. Choose the sunniest area and allow at least 1 m between each rootstock. This variety tolerates partial shade.
In the case of a natural water feature (pond or lake), ensure that the water level remains relatively stable and that the water is neither too acidic nor too alkaline (pH between 6.5 and 7.5).
If there are fish in your pond, spreading a thick layer of coarse gravel around the base is preferable to deter them from digging up the rootstock.
Water lilies are hungry plants. Every year, at the beginning of the growing season, apply a slow-release fertiliser that will nourish your water lily throughout its growing period (for example, Osmocote 10-11-18-2 with a duration of 5-6 months).
During the summer, remove any leaves that may grow excessively in the centre of the clump, keeping only the most beautiful ones. Remove those that are yellowed or stained.
