Description

Athyrium filix-femina, more commonly known as the Lady Fern, is a graceful perennial with tender green fronds that are deeply lobed, giving it a very light appearance. A plant that thrives in cool and shady areas, it is highly resistant to diseases and very hardy. Perfect for shaded gardens, natural ponds or cool woodlands.

The Lady Fern, known as Athyrium filix-femina in Latin, belongs to the Athyriaceae family. It is a perennial plant native to all temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. With a relatively slow growth rate, this fern establishes itself through its creeping rhizomes if the conditions are right. It can reach a height of 120 cm (47in) and a spread of 80 cm (32in), forming large clumps from a central point. The bipinnate deciduous foliage is a very bright tender green colour.  The undersides of the leaves are covered in orange spores.

Plant Athyrium filix-femina in humus-rich, moist, neutral to slightly acidic soil. This perennial thrives in shade or partially shaded areas with morning sun, under trees or bushes without being affected by competition. The foliage slowly withers from November, but it's best to avoid cutting it back before the end of March as it provides good protection for the stump. During the first year of cultivation, it is necessary to ensure the young plant is adequately watered to help its establishment. Athyrium filix-femina is primarily a plant for damp shade or partial shade, and is perfectly suited to woodlands or near water features that reflect its elegant silhouette. It pairs well with conifers, fuchsias, and hydrangeas. It also adapts well to being grown in large pots in the shade, allowing for a closer appreciation of its graceful and airy foliage.

Good to know: The Lady Fern was a popular choice in Victorian ferneries in the late 19th century, and it has given rise to many horticultural varieties with variegated or curious-shaped fronds, such as the variety ‘Victoriae’ or ‘Frizelliae’.
