Description

Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae', more commonly known as the Northern Lady Fern, is probably the most spectacular of the lady fern cultivars due to the unique design of its cristate fronds. Majestic and truly original, this lady fern, although it appreciates coolness and shade, requires less water than its relatives. This rarity is a gem for shaded gardens, natural ponds, or cool undergrowth.

The Lady Fern 'Victoriae' belongs to the Athyriaceae family. It is a cultivar of Athyrium filix-femina, native to all temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. With a rather slow growth, this fern establishes itself permanently through its creeping rhizomes.  It will reach a height of 90 cm (35in) and eventually form large clumps.

The Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae' forms a clump of considerable size from a central point. The deciduous, bipinnate foliage is a very bright, tender green colour. It is finely divided, and curiously architectural, with each pinna branching off from the midrib, giving the impression of a row of small crosses.

Plant Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae' in humus-rich soil, that is cool, and neutral to slightly acidic. This perennial will thrive in shade or in partially shaded areas with morning sun, under trees or bushes without fearing competition. The foliage slowly dries out starting from November, but it should not be cut before the end of March as it provides good protection for the stump. During the first year of cultivation, it is necessary to ensure young plants are watered to help their establishment.

Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae' is primarily a plant for damp shade or partial shade, where it will fully reach its potential in woodland or around water features that reflect its elegant silhouette. It pairs well with conifers, fuchsias, and hydrangeas. It adapts well to cultivation in large pots in the shade, allowing for a closer appreciation of its airy and spectacular foliage.

A favourite of Victorian ferneries in the late 19th century, Athyrium filix-femina has produced many horticultural varieties with variegated fronds or curious shapes. 'Victoriae' was named in honour of Queen Victoria. Spore propagation does not produce identical plants, so it is usually propagated by separating the shoots outside the clumps or most often through in vitro tissue culture.
