I am really satisfied with this young plant/holly as the 2/3L plant was magnificent, very green and leafy. It's a beautiful discovery for me. It quickly joined another young plant in a shady corner at the foot of a Japanese maple. It adds character to my garden border.

Description

The Holly Fern, or Cyrtomium falcatum, is a highly decorative fern. Its fronds, glossy and dark green, bring brightness to shaded beds for a large part of the year. Indeed, they are evergreen in regions with mild winters and relatively constant temperatures. This fern thrives in sheltered areas with humus-bearing, rich, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil.

Native to Asia, this fern forms a clump of upright but flexible fronds. If it is happy, it can reach a spread of 70cm (28in) and a height of 60cm (24in). Its fronds are composed of alternate lanceolate pinnules. These pinnules have a unique feature: they are curved like small scythes. Hence the nickname "False Aspidium". They are also slightly dentate, giving the foliage a resemblance to that of Holly and Mahonia. Below -5°C (23°F), the fronds disappear and it is advisable to protect the stump, which can withstand slightly colder temperatures if sheltered from the wind. In case of temporary drought, watering is recommended in summer. However, avoid watering in winter.

These beautiful ferns appreciate the company of Primroses, Corydalis flexuosa, and Epimediums. They form a green clump throughout the seasons, providing a backdrop to woodland plants. Their glossy leaves can be used in floral arrangements.

Planting and care

Cyrtomium falcatum plants prefer a moist but well-drained soil, rich in humus, without limestone, and shaded, especially in winter where the alternation of nocturnal cold and sunlight is often fatal to them, like camellias that dislike "hot and cold" conditions. In colder regions, a litter layer of dead leaves is necessary to protect the stump, which may suffer if temperatures drop below -10°C (14°F). At the end of winter, if the fronds have dried, you can remove them.
