Description

Carex buchananii 'Green Twist' is a variety of Buchanan's Sedge that is interesting for the graphic design of its evergreen foliage: a glossy olive green, curled at the ends, it is beautiful all year round. This medium-sized grass has an upright clump habit, without heaviness, and flowers discreetly in the summer. It will be as decorative in a flowerbed as in a pot on the terrace or balcony.

Carex buchananii 'Green Twist' belongs to the sedge family, like all Carex. It is a horticultural variety derived from the Buchanan's Sedge, native to New Zealand. It is a very hardy perennial plant that prefers soils close to neutrality (neither too acidic nor alkaline), that never completely dry out, but not waterlogged. The cultivar 'Green Twist' was selected for its foliage that remains olive green all year round. This plant forms a beautiful clump, reaching a height of 45-50cm, with an upright but flexible habit. Its narrow, cylindrical leaves are erect and then slightly drooping as they age. They have curled, very light-coloured ends. This Carex timidly flowers between June and August, depending on the climate. Its 3cm long brown spikes are quite insignificant. The foliage remains decorative in winter.

Carex buchananii 'Green Twist' will have a great effect in a not too dry rockery, along a path or border, with bronze or copper-coloured Carex (Carex 'Bronco') or small perennials with contrasting colours (Sedum 'Purple Emperor', Heuchera Binoche, Frilly, Aster dumosus 'Anneke' pink...). Also consider pairing it with perennials that have red or orange flowers (Tritoma 'Traffic Lights', avens...). It is also superb in a large pot!

Planting and care

Carex buchananii 'Green Twist' is quite easy to grow when planted in well-drained garden soil, but not completely drying out in the summer. It also dislikes excessively acidic or chalky soils. This carex adapts to poor soils. It prefers temperate climates, not too hot in the summer, not too harsh in the winter.

Planting: Prepare a planting hole (20cm on all sides). In heavy soil, mix a little compost with the crumbled soil. The top of the root ball should be covered with 3cm of soil. Firmly press down and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. In dry weather, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant.
