Carex 'Feather Falls' is a new variety of resistant and easy-to-grow hybrid sedge. With its long, slightly curly, variegated evergreen leaves, this false grass forms a small, unique, and sculptural tuft, perfect for bringing life to borders, edges or containers on a patio or balcony all year round. Its spring flowering of small beige spikes with white beards enhances its decorative appearance. Versatile and perfect for adding style to any setting, this carex tolerates sun, cold, and even moderate drought periods!
Carex 'Feather Falls' is a sedge belonging to the Cyperaceae family; it is a cousin of grasses to which it bears a resemblance. It is a recent Japanese variety, introduced to the market in 2016. This hybrid is derived from Carex oshimensis, a very hardy Japanese botanical species, widespread in the rocky undergrowth of Honshu Island. 'Feather Falls' is a small herbaceous plant with short rhizomes that forms a tuft with a compact, light, upright and gracefully trailing habit, measuring about 35cm (14in) in all directions. It does not sucker, but increases in size year after year. Its linear, gramineous, evergreen leaves measure up to 35 to 40cm (14 to 16in) in length. Their edges are tapered and their tips trailing. Their greenish-grey hue is tinged with a white margin with cream highlights. In May, beige and white spikes measuring 1 to 3cm (1in) long appear just above the foliage, carried on slender stems measuring 40cm (16in) in height. It is worth noting that this hybrid perennial sedge will live for many years in the garden.
The 'Feather Falls' sedge is a small 'herb' with refined foliage and a minimalist style, which will form a bouquet of bright foliage gently overflowing from containers. Its design does not require the presence of another plant beside it, but it will complement its neighbours and bring lightness to voluptuous perennials. Plant it en masse along a path, at the forefront of flower or shrub beds. Its texture contrasts with that of fern fronds, and its flexibility complements the roundness of heucheras with fantastic colours. In the sun, this carex will be superb with slightly taller grasses (Stipa pulcherrima, Pennisetum advena 'Rubrum', Muhlenbergia capillaris). For a beautiful wild effect, plant it en masse in a contemporary or country garden.

Botanical data
Carex 'Feather Falls' adapts to all types of soil, as long as they are relatively light and well-drained. However, it prefers soils rich in humus and leaf compost. Once well established, it tolerates periods of moderate drought, but will require more regular watering in case of dry summers. This makes it an easy grass to grow and succeed with. It adapts to all exposures, tolerating the sun well, but its foliage will be brighter in partial shade or dappled sunlight. Plant when all risk of frost has passed. Water generously when planting. Avoid excessive fertiliser inputs. Remove damaged foliage during the growing season and prune the clump at the end of winter, just before the start of new growth.
Growing in pots will require more abundant watering and fertilisation in spring.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
