Description

Carex flagellifera 'Bronzita' is a highly ornamental variety of sedge with a loosely tousled habit and finely bronzed and reddish-brown foliage. Spectacular when planted en masse to form medium-sized borders, interesting when scattered in small groups to create a more natural effect and a more permanent structure in the garden, this carex is also suitable for flower pots and containers where its sculptural appearance will stand out. For a sumptuous combination, surround it with orange flowers.

Carex flagellifera 'Bronzita' comes from a plant called the Flagellate Sedge, probably so-called because of its long and slender fringed leaves resembling 'whips'. Its appearance is similar to C. buchananii and C. testacea, two species appreciated for their highly ornamental colours throughout the year. C. flagellifera (synonym C. lucida) belongs to the Cyperaceae family, native to New Zealand. The 'Bronzita' variety, selected in the Netherlands, forms a tousled clump with a semi-upright habit. Its foliage hangs loosely. At maturity, this plant forms a beautiful clump about 40cm (16in) in height and 50cm (20in) in width. Its long and very fine leaves are coloured brown-bronze with reddish reflections. They are lighter at the tips. Floral stems resembling leaves appear in summer. They elongate as they grow, before eventually sprawling in a tangled mass on the ground. This perennial is easy to grow in well-drained soil. The foliage persists in winter.

We grow this sedge in a well-exposed grass garden on a south-facing bank. It is an attractive and versatile 'grass' that adapts to any well-drained soil. This resilient perennial can be used in challenging areas such as in urban gardens as ground cover, where it can play a significant role in soil stabilisation on embankments. It is also a good plant for containers, to be placed on balconies or patios. Carex flagellifera 'Bronzita' decorates the garden with its warm-toned mane throughout the year. Imagine a beautiful winter scene dominated by the "daughters of the wind": this flagellate sedge will look phenomenal accompanied by grasses like Stipa tenuifolia or S. capillata, or blue oat grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens), with clumps interspersed with small evergreen shrubs like heathers or germander oak. When planted en masse along a path or alley, it will emphasise and soften the layout, whether in a contemporary or rural garden.

With 1000 species of sedges growing worldwide, you are sure to find one that suits your garden. They can be found in all environments where plants grow. Some adapt very easily to many situations and any garden soil, while others must be cultivated in their specific environment. Make your choice!

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole measuring 20x20x20cm (8x8x8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. Firmly press down and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your young plant. This carex can withstand brief frosts of around -10°C (14°F). It prefers soils that remain slightly moist in summer.
