Description

The Luzula nivea or white woodrush grows at low altitudes.

Dressed all in white, this plant's name originates from its white flowers, which are airy and resemble snowflakes, and from its evergreen leaves, which are green with a fine border of white hairs that give it a silky appearance.

This small grass grows in the understory and tolerates dry shade relatively well. It likes light and humus-bearing soils and dislikes heavy soils that become waterlogged in winter. Its grass-like foliage contrasts beautifully with the round leaves of hostas, podophyllum, and rodgersias.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your bucket (after removing the pot) so that the top of the plant's root ball is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Firmly press down the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to help the young plant fully establish.
