Description

The Miscanthus Collection is a trio of ornamental perennial grasses, including the varieties ‘Red Chief’, ‘Gracillimus’ and ‘Adagio’. Known for their fine and variably colours, Chinese reeds form very beautiful clumps that bring lightness and movement to the garden. Their flowering, which occurs from September to November, takes the form of feathery spikes in varied shades. These robust and cold-resistant plants thrive in well-drained soils, from moist to occasionally dry. They flourish in sunny borders.

The collection consists of:

1 x Miscanthus sinensis ‘Red Chief’: This compact variety is distinguished by its reddish spikes that appear in autumn and its green foliage that turns coppery as winter approaches. It reaches a height of 1.20 m and spreads to 1 m.

1 x Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’: Valued for its graceful habit and its rare fine olive-green foliage, this miscanthus forms a dense clump reaching 1.50 m in height. Its silvery spikes appear in autumn, offering discreet elegance to landscape compositions.

1 x Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’: Compact and resilient, very floriferous, ‘Adagio’ is ideal for small gardens or pot cultivation. At 90 cm tall, it features fine leaves of silver-grey green and rosy spikes in autumn. Perfect for adding movement to smaller spaces.

The Miscanthus in this collection should be planted in spring or autumn, in full sun, in well-drained and fertile soil. They can be used in borders, in a large bed or as specimen plants for a structured effect. For a successful arrangement, place ‘Gracillimus’, the tallest variety, at the back of the border, followed by ‘Red Chief’ in the centre for its fineness and elegance, and finally ‘Adagio’ at the front for a cascading effect. Allow for 2 plants per m² for a dense effect or space them 70 cm apart for a more airy look.

Combine this collection of Miscanthus with Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus’ whose large purple-pink flowers beautifully complement the silvery and rosy spikes of the grasses. Position 3 echinaceas at the front to contrast with the slender foliage of the Miscanthus. Then add airy Verbena bonariensis (4 plants), with their mauve flowers rising to the height of the Miscanthus. Finally, plant Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (2 plants), whose dark pink autumn flowers will extend the visual interest of the scene until the first frosts. All these plants will create a border of 5 to 6 m².

Planting and care

Miscanthus sinensis prefers warm exposures and a healthy, fairly rich and deep soil that is well-drained but remains slightly moist in summer. This plant tolerates occasional drought if the soil is deep. It can adapt to poor soil, but it will be less impressive and its growth will be slower. It is best to prune the foliage down to the ground at the very beginning of spring, after the harshest frosts have passed.

For container planting, choose a large container (minimum 45 L), filled with fertile, well-draining, and loose growing medium. A mixture composed of 20% good garden soil, 20% draining elements (pumice, gravel, or coarse river sand), and 60% horticultural compost. Add well-decomposed compost once or twice a year (late winter and autumn) or slow-release fertiliser. When it becomes less floriferous, divide the clump and use the peripheral shoots to replant.
