Description

The Pennisetum alopecuroides f. viridescens, also known as feathery fountain grass, forms in late summer long brown plume-like spikes with a grey reflection.

This tall and non-invasive grass forms a very compact stump from which large deciduous light green leaves emerge, giving it a bushy appearance. In late summer, Pennisetum viridescens produces beautiful brown spikes with silver-gray reflections that bloom until autumn and, once dried, provide a splendid decoration throughout winter.

Easy to grow, Pennisetum alopecuroides f. viridescens thrives in bright exposures and light, well-drained, moderately moist soils. Stunning in a wild garden, combine it with yarrows, gaura, and eupatoriums, or in a more modern style, pair the feathery fountain grass with Allium sphaerocephalon, Persicaria amplexicaulis, or hydrangea Annabelle.

Planting and care

To plant the Pennisetum alopecuroides f. viridescens, you'll need a hole that measures 20 cm (7.9 in) x 20 cm (7.9 in) x 20 cm (7.9 in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil. After partially filling the hole, remove the plant from its pot and place it inside, ensuring that the top of the root ball is covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. Firm the soil gently and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you must water regularly for a few weeks to help your plant establish itself.

Grasses remain ornamental throughout the year but renew their foliage in spring. We recommend cutting back your plants to 10 cm (3.9 in) at the end of January or the beginning of February for optimal growth. This pruning will remove dead material and make way for new foliage.
