Schizachyrium scoparium Blue Heaven

Schizachyrium scoparium Blue Heaven is a magnificent grass with blue foliage turning pink and then deep purple in autumn.

This brand new selection was discovered in a field by Marie Meyer from the University of Minnesota. It differs mainly from the species type due to the colour of its foliage, a superb grey-blue during the season, turning deep purple with violet reflections from mid-September, becoming more intense until November, and then turning copper brown. This colouring is very intense in regions with large temperature variations in autumn.

It also has the great advantage, compared to other grasses, of remaining upright and decorative throughout the winter.

Schizachirium Blue Heaven also differs from the species by its more upright and taller habit, often reaching and exceeding 80cm (32in) in height. The small white flowers carried in vertical spikes appear just before the foliage turns red. It is only natural that this wonder has found its place in our flower beds, among Deschampsia with a very pale gold colour in autumn.
