More information

A beautiful perennial grass from our mountains, with non-invasive clump-forming roots. This species forms a dense tuft of leaves with an intense green colour, reaching about 80cm (32in). It blooms in summer, in the form of loose pyramidal panicles, ranging from pale green to brown. Hardy and undemanding, evergreen in winter, Poa chaixii deserves to be more often planted in gardens. It can be grown in full sun or partial shade, in any well-drained soil, preferably moist.

Description

Poa chaixii, also known as Chaix's meadow grass, Sudeten meadow grass, or mountain meadow grass, is part of a group of grasses that are underutilized in gardens despite their charm and ease of cultivation. This tall species native to European mountains is quite striking: it forms a dense and tall tuft of intense green, even in winter, and comes alive in summer with numerous panicles of flowers that transition from green to brown, dancing in the wind and playing with the light. It is a beautiful natural 'herb,' never invasive. Hardy and undemanding, this grass fits well in sunny or semi-shaded beds, in well-drained, preferably moist soil.

Poa chaixii is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Poaceae, like many other grasses. It is widespread in much of Europe, where it can be found in mountainous regions. In France, this species is present in forested areas in the East, South, Central regions, and even as far as Haute-Vienne and Loiret. This plant has a cushion-like base, meaning it does not spread, forming a dense clump of flat leaves, 4 to 10mm wide, with prominent veins, and a meadow green colour. It can be recognized by its compressed stems at the base. When mature, the plant reaches a height of 80cm (32in) to 1m (3ft), with a width of 50 to 60cm (20 to 24in). The foliage remains evergreen in winter. The flowering period occurs from June to August, depending on the climate. Long stems emerge from the foliage, bearing pyramid-shaped inflorescences filled with spikelets. These inflorescences are green when they first bloom, gradually turning silver-grey and then brown when mature.

Hardy down to -15°C in well-drained soil, Poa chaixii is one of the grasses that tolerates partial shade well, although it prefers sunlight. It is appreciated for its beautiful lightness of vegetation and decorative appearance throughout the year. Like other 'herbs,' it is perfect for adding volume and lightness to flower beds. It can easily be combined with flowering and lightweight perennials such as toadflaxes, Penstemons, field daisies, heart-leaved asters, Scabious, as well as annual poppies and damask flowers. It can also be planted en masse in a slightly wild or contemporary garden, to watch the wind create infinite waves.

Planting and care

Plant Poa chaixii in partial shade or full sun, in well-drained but not too chalky soil, remaining slightly moist even in summer. In regions with very cold winters, it is preferable to plant in spring, while in mild regions, planting in September-October is recommended. To help the plant establish, it is important to carefully untangle its main visible roots around the root ball when removing it from its container, before planting, and to follow watering instructions until it regains strength and in case of drought. Remove faded inflorescences and prune the foliage no later than March.
