Description

This collection of 'Popsicle' Kniphofias brings a touch of exoticism and colour to sunny flower beds, even in small gardens. These perennials form a low clump of fine shiny leaves, from which brightly coloured spikes emerge in waves throughout the summer. The 'Popsicle' varieties have been selected for their compact habit, cheerful colours, and continuous flowering.

The collection consists of:

- x 1 'Banana Popsicle' Kniphofia: yellow flowers with a hint of orange.

- x 1 'Mango Popsicle' Kniphofia: flowers in shades of orange to golden yellow.

- x 1 'Papaya Popsicle' Kniphofia: flowers in shades of red, bright orange, and yellow.

The 'Popsicle' Kniphofia is a perennial with fleshy rhizomes, whose above-ground vegetation dries up in winter and reappears in spring. Its foliage reaches a height of 45 cm. The inflorescences rise to 60-70 cm and are nectar-rich. Each plant occupies about 60-70 cm of ground after 3-4 years of cultivation. 3 plants cover an area of about 1 m² after 4-5 years of cultivation. 'Popsicle' Kniphofias adapt to any well-drained soil, not too dry in summer, and tolerate very cold winters, to -20 °C.

You can plant the Kniphofias from this collection in a flower bed with garden valerians, blue, white, or red shrubby salvias. You can create a small contrasting scene with Penstemon Husker Red, 'Anthemis tinctoria Sauce Hollandaise', and Nepeta Purrsian Blue. The 'Popsicle' red-hot pokers can also be placed along the edge of a lawn or pathway, mixing the colours, and intermingling them with small agapanthus or dwarf cannas like 'Confetti' or 'Louis Cottin' to create an exotic atmosphere.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Popsicle' Kniphofia in a very sunny location in well-drained soil. In very clayey soil, you will add 1/3 of coarse gravel and 1/3 of topsoil to the soil in your garden. Kniphofia, although very robust, does not tolerate excess water in winter. It may be necessary to plant it on a small mound or slope to avoid any excess stagnant water, especially in very cold regions.
