Description

The Hieracium aurantiacum is a small perennial ground cover, very stoloniferous and capable of growing on dry, rocky slopes in full sun.

The orange hawkweed (its common name) forms rosettes of evergreen, spatulate leaves, of a lovely bright green that carpet the ground. The small, but numerous red-orange flowers have a coppery yellow heart followed by light seeds similar to those of dandelions.

It thrives in the sun, in any well-draining soil. You could plant it along a gravel-covered rocky path, leave for 3 years, come back, and you no longer have a path!

Planting and care

The Hieracium aurantiacum only thrives in uncultivated, dry and stony places. The surest way to get rid of them is to plant them in good, moist, clayey soil that is well-maintained, and even then, H. aurantiacum might survive! It is invasive due to its running stolons, its creeping roots, and the impressive quantity of spontaneous sowings it sends everywhere. At least now you have been warned.
