Description

Kirengeshoma palmata is a perennial native to Japanese woodlands, with waxy, butter-yellow flowers. This striking plant forms magnificent clumps of palmate leaves.

In early spring, Kirengeshoma palmata forms stems emerging from the soil. They are adorned with lovely palmate and toothed leaves with shallow lobes, reaching over 20cm (8in) in length (excluding the petiole) under favourable conditions.

In late summer, beautiful pale-yellow, satin-like flowers blossom, hanging like little bells at 1m (3ft) in height. The thick and fleshy petals may tempt one to eat them, but it is not advisable as even slugs do not seem to fancy this plant!

Originating from Japanese woodlands, Kirengeshoma palmata is a very hardy perennial to be grown in moist humus-rich soil, devoid of limestone. A moist woodland edge will suit it perfectly, alongside thalictrum, podophyllum, rodgersia, and more.

Planting and care

Kirengeshoma palmata is a perennial plant that slowly but surely establishes itself with the help of its robust rootstocks. Its apparent fragility actually hides excellent hardiness, down to -20°C (-4°F) and even lower, if care is taken to cover the stump with a litter layer of dead leaves in winter, when the foliage has fallen.
