Description

Silene uniflora Weisskehlchen, also known as Maritime Silene Weisskehlchen or Single-flowered Silene Weisskehlchen, is a very robust perennial groundcover that forms white and fragrant flowering cushions for a good part of summer. It combines strength and delicacy with green-blue, semi-evergreen foliage. It grows naturally on the cliffs of the European coasts, and thrives in rock gardens, between the stones of walls or in balcony planters.

Silene uniflora 'Weisskenhlchen' is derived from the maritime silene which belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family and is native to the coasts of Western Europe. This perennial's growth is quite fast and its mature size will not exceed 15 cm (6in) high and 30 cm (12in) wide.
Silene uniflora Weisskehlchen forms a small, creeping cushion. Its lanceolate and leathery green-blue leaves contrast with the thin and brittle stems that bear beautiful pure white flowers with a brownish-green swollen calyx from June to August. The flowers are 20 to 25 mm (1in) in diameter, arranged in sparsely branched cymes. They are nectar-rich and fragrant.

Plant Silene uniflora Weisskehlchen in ordinary, moist to dry, permeable and humus-bearing, rocky or limestone soil. In heavy soil the addition of compost or soil improver is beneficial. A gravel-rich soil yields good results. This plant prefers a very sunny exposure. Lightly prune the clump after flowering to help it regenerate.

Silene uniflora Weisskehlchen is a good plant for slopes and rock gardens. It can be accompanied by other flowering cushions such as helianthemums, dwarf artemisia Artemisia lanata, wall bellflower, Caucasian rockcress, Phlox subulata, Delosperma cooperi or Erigeron karvinskianus, and bloody cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum). This plant forms a lovely decoration between the stones of a wall or pavement, or in a planter. It adapts well to container gardening.
