Description

The Achene Millefolium 'Summerwine' is a perennial herbaceous plant with a spreading habit, forming an upright clump. Easy to grow, it offers a beautiful and abundant flowering from July to September, perched on channelled and villous stems. These flowers are grouped in flat corymbs measuring 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter. They are of a reddish-violet colour and turn to violet-pink and then to yellow-brown. The flowering gives rise to small fruits, the achenes.

The semi-evergreen leafage of the Achene Millefolium 'Summerwine' is dark green, contrasting with the red colour of the flowers. It is dense and has the particularity of being aromatic. It consists of leaves cut into strips and linear. They are feathery. Native to Europe and Asia, the Herb of St. John's, a popular name for yarrow, is a very hardy and very resistant vigorous plant. It can reach a height of 90 cm (35in) at maturity.

Its majestic foliage allows the plant to be an excellent ground cover. It is an ideal plant in maritime areas for a sunny rock garden as well as for flower meadows. Yarrow is also grown as a border plant. Its cut flowers make lovely fresh or dried bouquets.

Planting and care

Place Achillea 'Summerwine' mainly in full sun in a light, neutral to chalky soil, even rocky, and very well-drained. It has good drought resistance and is very hardy. Easy to grow, it does not require any particular maintenance. Simply remove the faded flower stems to promote a second flowering and water regularly. You can prune from time to time to maintain a compact habit. In summer, make sure the soil does not dry out too much. Powdery mildew is common for Achillea. Beware of aphid attacks.
