The young plant arrived feeble, but also burnt and tarred black at certain ends. Still languishing in the pot where I transplanted it. Adding to that, an abominable customer service. I will never order from here again.

Description

Aconitum x cammarum 'Bicolor' is a beautiful perennial tuberous plant. It blooms from June to August in panicles of bluish-purple and white flowers in the shape of a helmet, hence its nickname "Jupiter's Helmet".

This little-known hardy plant reaches a height of 1.20m (4ft). It produces deciduous, alternate, shiny, finely cut, lobed, dark green leaves, 5 to 10cm (2 to 4in) long. The upright and arched stems bear panicles of bluish-purple and white helmet-shaped flowers, 40cm (16in) long.

Beware! All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested (anaesthetic). Do not plant it near vegetables or children's areas.

Aconitum cammarum 'Bicolor' grows in deep, moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in semi-shaded conditions. It tolerates limestone. Adding compost at planting is recommended. It needs moisture in summer and no stagnant water in winter.

The 'Bicolor' aconite is perfect against a wall or around a bush. Despite its toxicity, it deserves a place in the garden. Plant it in the background of flower beds, in the company of tall perennial geraniums, dahlias, or miscanthus grasses.

Tips: Wait until the 5th year to divide them.
