young plant arrived ridiculously small, with one leaf in the pot. We'll see next year if it grows back.

Description

The 'Ivorine' Northern Aconite is a perennial bush. This ornamental plant with its ivory flowering that contrasts with its dark green foliage blooms from June to July. Thanks to its Scandinavian origins, it is the first Aconite to appear. It is also very cold resistant. Its inflorescence takes the form of erect clusters, 60cm (24in) high, containing large flowers. These flowers take the shape of narrow hoods and are composed of 5 sepals and numerous stamens.

The dark foliage of Aconitum forms a deciduous clump. The leaves are divided into 3 to 7 lobes. At maturity, the 'Ivorine' Northern Aconite can reach a height of 80cm (32in). The perennial can be grown both in borders and as a stand-alone plant. Ideal against a wall or around a bush, it can also be found in pots. Its flowers are lovely cut flowers.

The white Aconite is present in the gardens of priests. It is a medicinal plant with antispasmodic properties. It is also highly toxic in all its parts, especially the roots.

Planting and care

The Northern Aconite 'Ivorine' thrives in partial shade in moist soil. It does not tolerate dry soils. If you want to grow it in full sun, the soil must be damp or else the flowers will not bloom. Plant Aconites at a depth of 5cm (2in), spaced 50cm (20in) apart. Provide support with stakes if it gets damaged by the wind. Remove faded flowers during flowering to prolong it. Once the flowering is over and the clump is no longer decorative, cut back the withered stems. This perennial can suffer from root rot in heavy soil and from verticillium wilt (fungus). It can be attacked by aphids. It is a very easy plant to grow.
