Description

Agapanthus inapertus 'Nigrescens' is a beautiful and majestic variety that offers long pendulous dark violet flowers carried on sturdy floral stems over 70cm (28in) tall.

Agapanthus inapertus 'Nigrescens' blooms from July to September depending on the region and produces beautiful globular umbels 12cm (5in) in diameter carried on long stems 70cm (28in) tall. The very graphic flowers are shaped like long pendulous trumpets and are dark violet in colour. When cut and placed in a vase, they will bring freshness to your home. The foliage of Agapanthus inapertus is naturally deciduous.

Hardy to around -10°C, plant Agapanthus inapertus 'Nigrescens' either in a pot placed on a sunny terrace for abundant flowering, or in the ground, in a warm exposure and in a cool and well-drained soil, in a perennial border or bed, or in a mass planting or border. It is a plant that thrives by the sea, in an English cottage, and even in a city garden.

Planting and care

Agapanthus inapertus 'Nigrescens' is grown in full sun in a warm location, in a protected area facing south. It tolerates drought well. Place it in a soil that is rich and moist, but especially well-drained in winter. Water Agapanthus regularly during the growing period (twice a week). However, avoid watering them while the plant is dormant. In winter, the Agapanthus fears excessive moisture and does not like waterlogged soil. That is why you should mulch the base with a layer of dead leaves, about 20cm (8in) thick, and cover them with a mesh to prevent them from being blown away by the wind. Additionally, snow is a very good protection against excessive moisture and cold. If in a pot, bring the plant indoors for shelter. When planting, place it 10cm (4in) deep in a pot with a leaf compost mixture as the roots are fleshy. Once established in the ground, avoid disturbing Agapanthus. Remove any withered leaves in autumn. Cut back the faded stems so that the plant does not exhaust itself producing seeds.
