The plant was very well protected and already has a nice bunch of leaves. Can't wait to see the flowers next spring.

Description

Agapanthus 'Megan's Mauve' is a large variety of Agapanthus, bearing spectacular umbels of astonishing mauve-blue in June-July, at a height of 1m (3ft) from the ground. Each flower has petals with a violet central line. This moderately hardy evergreen variety produces narrow dark green leaves that are ornamental even outside the flowering season. It is ideal in large pots on the terrace, or planted in small groups near walkways. This collectible plant should be planted in well-drained soil, in full sun, and should never lack water during its growth period.

Agapanthus belong to the lily family. The recent hybrid variety 'Megan's Mauve' forms a narrow clump of linear dark green foliage, about 50cm (20in) in height, which remains very ornamental even in winter. The spherical umbels of 30 to 40 flowers rise above, carried by very long and sturdy stems, up to 1m (3ft) in height. The flowering takes place between July and September depending on the region. The purple flower buds open into numerous trumpets with an unusual hue that is intermediate between lilac and blue. Each petal is marked with a dark central line, violet to indigo. The white stamens are tipped with almost black anthers, giving the whole something truly different that catches the eye.

This exceptional evergreen variety is only moderately hardy (down to about -10°C (14°F)). Plant it either in a pot to overwinter and place it on a sunny terrace in summer, or in the ground, in a warm and well-drained spot. It is a plant that thrives by the sea, in an English cottage and even in a city garden, used as a focal point on a terrace, in an exotic or contemporary style. It goes well with perennials. Cut and placed in a vase, the flowers will bring freshness and a lot of originality to the house.

Planting and care

The 'Megan's Mauve' Agapanthus is grown in full sun in a warm location, in a protected area facing south. Place it in a rich and moist soil, but very well-drained to improve its hardiness. Water the agapanthus regularly during the growth period (twice a week), but not at all in winter. Mulch the base with a layer of dead leaves about 20cm (8in) thick, covered with a mesh to prevent wind damage. Snow also provides excellent protection against excessive moisture and cold. If in a pot, bring the plant indoors to protect it from severe frost, in an unheated room. During planting, plant them 10cm (4in) deep in a mixture of leaf compost and compost. Once established in the ground, try to avoid disturbing Agapanthus. Remove faded leaves in autumn. Cut off the flower stems so that the plant doesn't exhaust itself producing seeds.
