Description

Agapanthus 'Phantom' is a majestic Agapanthus of tall stature, offering bicoloured umbels in white and soft blue with golden stamens, carried well above a tuft of ribbon-like foliage. This foliage is evergreen in mild climates, and this variety tolerates frost up to about -10°C (14°F). Its flowers, which usually appear between June and August, are opulent, measuring up to 20cm (8in) in diameter. This agapanthus can be planted in open ground, in a sheltered position and with good winter protection, in many regions.

Agapanthus are plants of the lily family, native to South Africa, which naturally hybridize in nature or in our gardens. Agapanthus 'Phantom' is a hybrid cultivar that stands out for its significant growth and original flowering of great elegance. This plant develops and multiplies from a fleshy rhizome stump, forming a dense clump of linear, narrow, dark green foliage, at least 40cm (16in) in diameter, expanding over time. The abundant flowering takes place in summer, more or less early depending on the climate, and lasts about 6 weeks. Strong stems, 80-90cm (32-35in) tall approximately, bear at their tips large hemispherical umbels, composed of about twenty small campanulate flowers in pure white and soft blue, carried by long peduncles.

Agapanthus 'Phantom' is a beautiful variety to integrate into the background of flower beds behind grey foliage, Gauras, and Ceanothus. It brings an exotic touch to sunny flower beds, while effectively covering the ground with its beautiful foliage throughout the year. This semi-hardy variety should be placed in a protected and south-facing location, and a thick mulch should be applied at its base. The 'Phantom' Agapanthus is suitable for various environments. It is particularly suitable for mild coastal climates. In harsher regions, it is perfect in a pot to be stored away each winter. It is very beautiful when associated with other mauve or blue varieties in a minimalist setting with some blue grasses. It is also very decorative in flower beds with Daylilies, tall Delphiniums, and Clematis with blue flowers.

Planting and care

Plant Agapanthus 'Phantom' stumps by covering them with at least 10cm (4in) of good soil, this way they are more resistant to cold. It is essential to install them in spring and mulch them in winter. For pot cultivation, use 5 young plants for a 24cm (9in) pot and protect your pots in winter. They prefer a rich and moist, but well-drained soil, enriched with sand. Water them regularly during the growth period (twice a week). However, avoid watering them afterwards. They are sensitive to winter excess moisture. In pots, use a well-drained sandy mixture, slightly acidic. This plant seems to prefer shallow containers and will bloom abundantly if regularly fed with slow-release fertilizer.
