Description

This creeping bugle, Ajuga reptans 'Golden Glow', is a superb semi-evergreen perennial groundcover. The variegated foliage is incredibly beautiful. It quickly forms a carpet of rounded leaves, splashed with yellow-cream, rose-purple, and mint green, gradually changing to shades of caramel and gold over time. Its short spikes of bright blue flowers appear in spring, nestled among the pastel-toned leaves. This variety is less vigorous than most forms and is well-suited for container cultivation. It thrives in moist soil, protected from scorching sunlight.

Ajuga reptans is a perennial plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae, and is widespread in Europe, especially in its central and northern regions. It is also found in Western Asia and Algeria. 'Golden Glow', with its exceptional foliage and moderate vigour, stands out for its fast growth. This plant self-roots through stolons and eventually forms a carpet 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) tall and at least 40 cm (16in) in diameter. It develops semi-evergreen to evergreen rosettes of oblong, wavy, and veined leaves in shades of cream, tender green, pink, and purple. From May onwards, small spikes consisting of tiny flowers in a vivid blue colour appear above the foliage, interspersed with round, variegated leaves. They bloom for over a month. Towards the end of the season, the foliage becomes variegated with cream, gold, caramel, and orange.

Ajuga reptans 'Golden Glow' is a less exuberant variety that will occupy the space you give it. If it tends to escape the boundaries you set, its growth is easy to control by removing wandering stolons. It can be used to create beautiful pots, combined with anemones, alyssums, or campanulas. Bugles are among the best groundcover plants; they are perfect for dressing the base of trees and shrubs, in shaded borders in association with spring bulbs or lamiums with colourful foliage, delicate flowers of fairy wings (Epimedium), or Geranium macrorrhizum. They make good companions for hostas and shade-loving perennial geraniums. In a moist rock garden, they can be planted alongside Acaena 'Blue Haze' or buchananii, Azorella trifurcata 'Nana', lady's mantles, and saxifrages.

Planting and care

Happy to grow in most soils, Ajuga reptans 'Golden Glow' does not tolerate prolonged drought well, but on the other hand, it tolerates limestone soil very well. What the variety prefers is cool partial shade or dappled sunlight in a moist, humus-rich soil, even clay soil if well-drained. Ajuga reptans can be planted throughout the year, in shaded areas and in moist soil. It is very easy to cultivate and tolerates any type of soil, from the poorest to the richest. Beware of slugs in spring! They can wreak havoc on young plants.
