Description

Ajuga reptans Purple Torch is a spreading perennial that quickly grows using stolons to form large mats of bright pink flowers in spring.

The rampant bugle ‘Purple Torch' forms rosettes of evergreen leaves in a lovely light green colour, measuring about 6cm (2in) in diameter, which produce stolons that can quickly colonise the flowerbeds and potentially invade them. Starting in May, magnificent spikes of bright pink flowers bloom for over a month and are carried on short 15cm (6in) high peduncles. The flowers, arranged in whorls (around the floral stem), form a corolla (with two lips).

An excellent groundcover for sunny or partially shaded areas, Ajuga reptans Purple Torch can dress up the base shrubs, even in winter. It is undemanding in terms of soil type or position, although it prefers heavy and moist soils. When grown in full sun, it is important to keep the soil moist, especially in summer.

Ajuga will thrive alongside campanulas, hellebores, and heathers.
