Description

Ajuga reptans 'Sanne', a variety of creeping bugle, is an excellent easy-care perennial groundcover with subtle elegance. Its very shiny, dark green leaves are covered in spring with large spikes of white flowers. This plant spreads through rooting stems, similar to strawberries, and forms a carpet of evergreen rosettes, theoretically capable of spreading indefinitely. Like all bugles, it appreciates partial shade and moist soil in summer.

Ajuga reptans is a perennial plant of the mint family, Lamiaceae, which is widespread in Europe, especially in its central and boreal regions. It is also found in Western Asia and Algeria. Its habitat is typically meadows and fresh grassy areas.

With rapid-growth, the 'Sanne' variety self-roots thanks to its stolons and eventually forms a carpet 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) in height, with a minimum diameter of 60 cm (24in). It develops rosettes of evergreen leaves, oblong, wavy and veined, dark green, particularly shiny. From May onwards, robust spikes of small white flowers appear above the foliage. They bloom for more than a month.

Ajuga reptans 'Sanne' is an undemanding plant in terms of soil type as long as it is moist and in a partially shaded location. Bugles are among the best groundcover plants, perfect for dressing the base of trees and shrubs, in pots or shaded flower beds in association with spring bulbs or colourful lamiums, delicate-flowered Epimediums with beautiful foliage, or macrorrhizum geraniums. They are good companions for hostas and shade-loving perennial geraniums. In moist rockeries, they can be planted next to Acaena 'Blue Haze' or buchananii, Azorella trifurcata 'Nana', lady's mantle and saxifrages.

Planting and care

Undemanding in terms of soil type, Ajuga reptans 'Sanne' does not tolerate prolonged drought well. What it prefers is shade or cool partial shade in a soil rich in humus, even clay. It can be planted all year round in shady areas and in moist soil. It is very easy to cultivate and can withstand any type of soil, from the poorest to the richest. Watch out for slugs! Remove faded flowers by mowing in summer, this will thicken the density of the plants and prevent it from thinning out in the middle. You can limit its spread by removing excess runners at the end of winter or in autumn.
