My favourite columbines. I buy 3 of them every year, they are so beautiful. It is the longest and most abundant flowering among my columbines. Sometimes until early July. They make a very nice harmony with the first white and yellow roses. Can reach a height of 70 cm (28in), and a flower size of 12 cm (5in). A marvel. However, they do not seem to self-seed spontaneously.

Description

Aquilegia chrysantha Yellow Queen is a very graceful and easy-to-grow perennial plant that is suitable for borders and rock gardens.

The Yellow Queen Columbine has sumptuous, lemon-yellow flowers with long thread-like spurs. Blooming from May to July, its stiff, highly branched stems bear 5 to 15 flowers at their tips. The foliage is tender green, rounded, and often divided into two or three lobes. Standing at a height of 60-70cm, it self-seeds everywhere, occupying neglected corners.

The Yellow Queen Columbine is a perennial with excellent hardiness. It thrives in partial shade or non-scorching sunlight, in rich, humus-bearing soil that remains moist.

It pairs perfectly with perennial geraniums, ornamental garlic, or bleeding hearts.

Planting and care

Aquilegia chrysantha Yellow Queen is easy to grow and thrives in any light soil, neither too dry nor too wet, preferably in full sun. It can tolerate heavy soils but does not live long in them. Do not prune the faded flowers, as the self-seeding will ensure a longer presence in the garden.
