Description

The large flowers of the Blue Double Columbine are a little marvel of natural elegance. It blooms in May, in groups of 2 or 3 flowers.

Each flower has five flat sepals surrounding five petals, at the base of which 5 curved spurs point upwards.

Between the petals, one can see the golden yellow stamens.

Planted in well-drained soil in partial shade, it will self-seed naturally.

Planting and care

Aquilegia, like most mountain perennials, requires well-drained soil: plant in a light substrate, preferably chalky and possibly supplemented with sand, in a semi-shaded or sunny location. Hardy but with a short lifespan, it tends to disappear after a few seasons but will easily self-seed if you do not cut all the stems after flowering. It is quite susceptible to diseases and parasites, notably aphids and powdery mildew.
