Description

The Arabis ferdinandi coburgii Variegata is a rockery perennial par excellence. Its white flowers are borne on numerous peduncles, 10 cm (4in) tall, appearing in May in small upright clusters, above a dark green foliage marginated with cream. Its oblong, smooth and glossy leaves form a small cushion of evergreen rosettes.

Easy to grow, the variegated Arabis is content with ordinary soil, but it gives the best result when planted with stony soil, in well-drained soil and in full sun, as ground cover, bordering a bed, in a flowered pavement, as a crown on a low wall, or on a rocky slope. Pair with other rockery perennials such as small sedums, Iberis, Moss Phlox or Aubrietas, or as a ground cover for bulbous plants.

This species from mountainous regions in southeastern Europe has the same growth habit as Arabis caucasica with smaller glabrous leaves and a low growing habit.

Planting and care

If you have an Arabis ferdinandi coburgii Variegata plant, plant it in a sunny area with soil that drains well, even if it's dry and stony. To plant it, prepare the soil by breaking it up and adding blood, fish and bone to the bottom of the hole. Take the plant out of its pot and position it in the hole, covering the top of the root ball with soil. Water generously to remove air pockets and water regularly for a few weeks during dry weather to help the plant root. After it flowers, pinch out the stems to keep it growing compactly.
