Description

Asarum caudatum is a lovely species with creeping rhizomes and a ground cover habit, equipped with magnificent evergreen heart-shaped leaves.

Abundant in the state of Washington in the Northwestern United States, Asarum caudatum has leaves with a rounded base, with a uniform matte-green colour, reaching up to 8 cm (3 in) in diameter. The wine-red flowers are hidden under the foliage, but more visible than in other species. It forms a persistent ground cover, tolerating dense shade.

Easy to grow, Asarum caudatum is a shade plant, for moist to wet soil that is very rich in humus and always well drained.

Plant it on the edge of undergrowth or in a cool rock garden, alongside epimediums, hostas, Hakonehloa or heucheras.
