The flowers have a spectacular pruning, start very early in the season and the flowering is very long. Nothing to say, it's a very satisfying young plant.

Description

Aster x frickartii 'Mönch' is a perennial that offers large flowers resembling daisies, of a light lavender blue, at the end of sturdy stems. Once well established it will form a carpet of blooms. Ideal for quickly dressing up beds or mixed borders.

Derived from cross-breeding between A. amellus and A. thompsonii, the Aster x frickartii 'Mönch' can reach a height of 60 cm (24in) to 1 m (3ft) with a span of 50 cm (20in) depending on the soil type. Its medium green leaves are oval in shape, with roughly dentate margins. During the months of August to September a multitude of flowers ranging from 1 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter will appear along stems that are relatively flexible for a large aster. They fill beds with a cloud of flowers in lavender-blue colours.

Very hardy (from -20°C (1°F) to -25°C (1°F)), this variety can be grown in beds, mixed borders, or in pots. It pairs well with grasses or other perennials such as salvias or catmints. Easy to grow, it thrives in any type of soil without excessive moisture. It prefers a sunny site in regions where the sun is not too scorching, or otherwise partial shade.

Planting and care

Ideally plant your Aster x frikartii 'Mönch' in autumn or spring, choosing a sunny or partially shaded site as asters in general don't appreciate shade and need brightness to flower well. To prevent the stems from bending, pick a location sheltered from strong winds e.g. near a dense hedge or wall. The soil type doesn't matter much as long as you ensure good drainage by adding some gravel at the time of planting. Also remember to retain moisture at the base of your perennials by mulching flowerbeds from June onwards - which will make the flowering of this aster even more beautiful at the end of summer.
