Very beautiful and bright aster, tall, with a very good habit (well-structured and does not collapse). Appears to withstand drought and heat well. Good growth.

Description

Aster 'Vasterival' is a hybrid aster obtained at the Vasterival garden, probably derived from Aster laevis, to which it owes its purple, almost black stems. With a beautiful stature and abundant growth, it explodes in late summer with countless small flowers of pale mauve-pink which fade over time, giving a range of pastel shades that blend together in an airy mass. It is a very sturdy perennial, somewhat wild, with subtle charm. Magnificent in a natural or romantic border, where it freely suckers.

Aster 'Vasterival' belongs to the Asteraceae family. Starting in spring this perennial forms a tall and ramified clump, reaching a height of 90 cm (35in) to 1m (3ft) (up to 1m40 (4ft) in optimal conditions), and a spreads of 50-60 cm (20-24in), with fairly rapid growth. The very generous flowering takes place in September-October. The inflorescence is a capitule with peripheral, ligulate flowers that are thin and coloured pale pink with a hint of mauve. The central flowers (the heart) are yellow ochre and quickly turn brown. The heads measure approximately 3 cm (1in) in diameter and are borne on dark, thin and branching stems. The foliage is dark green with bluish reflections and a slightly purplish line down the middle. The basal leaves are lanceolate and dentate, while the stem leaves are clasping. This plant spreads quite rapidly via rhizomes.

With few requirements, Aster 'Vasterival' has a place in all gardens. Particularly ornamental, it is disease-free and thrives in ordinary soil that is not too heavy and well loosened. In combination with tall grasses it is absolutely remarkable - e.g. Panicum virgatum 'Squaw' or 'Heiliger Hain', Miscanthus 'Ganha' or 'Afrika' will create a very simple yet superb display in a low-maintenance border. You can add an intense magenta-red Salvia microphylla and place alongside a Cotinus 'Grace' or 'Royal Purple', or a compact winged Euonymus, for a combination of very warm colours that will be enhanced by the first hints of autumn.

The aster genus is extremely diverse, with a wide range of colours and sizes. Depending on the cultivars it is possible to extend the flowering period right through from spring to the end of autumn, allowing gardening enthusiasts to enjoy these lovely daisy-like flowers, with their rustic charm, for a large part of the year.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Vasterival' hybrid Aster in autumn or spring in ordinary, loose and well-drained, even alkaline or poor soil. Heavy and wet soil will shorten its lifespan. This variety tolerates heat and relative drought. It appreciates a sunny site but tolerates partial shade, where it will have a slightly looser habit, with the stems tending to bend. Avoid strong winds and stake if necessary.  Once installed, it is best not to move it as it does not like change. In a flowerbed maintain a spacing of at least 50 cm (20in) around the plant. Water in case of prolonged heatwaves. Divide the clumps every three or four years to keep them flowering well. This aster can become invasive. To promote a compact habit, pinch the stems from April-May.
