Description

Aster macrophyllus is a perennial with a bushy habit that can be found in all types of garden, even wild ones, whether in flowerbeds, rockeries, at the edge of ponds, or on its own. It is an ornamental plant. Flowering from August to October, it kicks off the autumn aster season, being one of the first to bloom. These flowers, grouped in corymbs, resemble daisies. They have a lilac-white colour with a yellow centre and measure 1 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. They make beautiful cut flowers that can be used in bouquets.

The flowers stand erect on upright stems. Known as 'Large-leaved Aster', it has deciduous light green foliage carried on reddish stems. It is clump-forming. The foliage consists of thick lanceolate leaves that are arranged alternately.

Aster macrophyllus can reach a height of 1 m (3ft). Native to boreal America, it is very hardy. It can be paired with Rudbeckias as well as Autumn Sedums for beautiful flowerbed displays. Native Americans used to smoke the dried leaves and make tea with them.

Planting and care

Aster macrophyllus mainly prefer light shade but tolerate full sun. Plant them in any moist soil. During planting, cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Easy to grow, cut them back every year after flowering in November and apply mulch. You can divide them in late autumn or early spring if they become too large. Stake the plants in March. Avoid stagnant moisture, which can be fatal. Asters are more or less susceptible to mildew - we recommend preventive treatment by spraying with Bordeaux mixture every 15 days from spring to autumn.
