Description

Aster novae-angliae 'Septemberrubin' is a tall bushy perennial reaching over 1m (3ft) in height, bearing pretty clusters of ruby red flowers from September until the first frosts.

Essential in autumn gardens, Aster novae-angliae is a very hardy perennial that forms a bushy clump and grows to 1.20m (4ft) in height.

It develops deciduous, simple, lanceolate green leaves, measuring 8cm (3in) long. In late summer it produces, on woody stems, ruby red flower heads with yellow-orange anthers. These late summer flowers are highly sought after for floral arrangements.

Very easy to grow, Aster novae-angliae 'Septemberrubin' appreciates rich, moist, and well-drained soil in full sun. Although it can tolerate shade, the foliage of this variety is susceptible to powdery mildew, so avoid excessively shady sites. Cut back faded stems at the end of winter and divide the clump if necessary in early spring.

The Septemberrubin Aster is used in borders, to cover fences, or for making bouquets, often paired with perennial geraniums or grasses.

Planting and care

Plant Aster novae-angliae Septemberrubin in well-drained soil, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of earth. It is not very demanding and can grow in any type of soil. Waterlogged soils in winter can kill it however. Asters are more or less susceptible to mildew. You can divide them at the end of autumn or beginning of spring if they become too large.
