Description

These three low perennial asters create a very colourful display in late season, from August to October, in a harmony of pale blue, pure white, and deep pink. Flowering and undemanding, they thrive in sunny locations and well-drained soil. Their low and spreading growth habit works wonders in rock gardens, along the edges of large beds, or even in a container on the terrace.

The collection consists of:

- Aster dumosus 'Jenny'a dwarf variety that forms a beautiful cushion-like mound, reaching 40 cm (16in) in height and 30 cm (12in) in width. Its small flowers, 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) wide, are a dense pink that verges on red, with a bright yellow center.

- 1 Aster ericoides f. prostratus 'Snow Flurry'. With a superb low and spreading habit, this aster also stands out for its abundant flowering of numerous small white daisies with yellow centers. This blooming, set against dark green foliage, creates a stunning snow-like effect. This plant reaches approximately 30 cm (12in) in height and 50 cm (20in) in width.

- 1 Aster dumosus 'Silberblaukissen'. This variety, with a more or less trailing base, forms a compact clump of 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) in all directions, adorned with small dark green leaves. Its very bright flowers are small pale blue heads with yellow centers.

Individually labelled

In the garden, this trio of asters will thrive in rock gardens and along borders. They are perfect for creating a charming, colourful autumn scene. To accompany them, consider golden or coppery grasses, tall Sedum spectabile, and purple Heucheras. Gardeners without gardens can easily cultivate these asters in large pots, remembering to provide them with water and fertiliser.

Planting and care

The Dwarf Aster can be planted in the spring or autumn, in the garden or in a pot. This perennial likes well-drained, rich, moist to occasionally dry soil, as well as sunny to semi-shady exposures. At the end of flowering (early winter), you can prune the flower stalks to allow the stump to strengthen. It is a perennial that is sensitive to powdery mildew, so be careful not to water its foliage. It can be divided after 3-4 years. This will allow you to plant it in multiple locations and allow it to regain its strength.
