Description

The Astilbe chinensis 'Veronica Klose', or Chinese Astilbe, is a perennial specifically suited to compact, heavy, moist soils. Its panicles, of a deep magenta pink, bloom from August to September and gradually fade. They bring a colourful touch to shaded areas.

'Veronica Klose' is a small variety, reaching a height of 40 cm (16in) with a spread of 35 cm (14in). It is best placed at the edge of a flower bed, surrounded by its companion shade plants, such as ferns. This rhizomatous perennial consists of a cluster of upright stems covered with compound, shiny, dark green leaves that are deeply lobed. At their tips, long spikes of colourful flowers bloom in late summer. The colour of the flowers, a deep pink when in buds, lightens and becomes pale pink at the end of the flowering period.

The hues of this Astilbe are very appealing and bring joy to the undergrowth and riverbanks. When planted in a ribbon-like pattern, they highlight shaded paths or reflect in ponds. When planted individually, they contrast their lush green neighbours, such as Hostas. They can tolerate sun exposure if filtered, are relatively hardy and robust, and require very little pruning.

Planting and care

The Astilbe chinensis Veronica Klose prefers to be planted in moist and heavy soil, with a semi-shaded exposure. It will tolerate a cool soil, but not one that is dried out, and a sunny, but filtered exposure. This is a perennial that is not afraid of the cold and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). Furthermore, it shows no sensitivity to diseases. At the end of flowering, you can cut off the withered stems to allow the clump to regenerate.
