It's too early for a proper review but it arrived in good condition, just a broken branch but the young plant seems to be doing well after a week in the ground. We'll wait and see in the spring!

Description

The 'Chocolate Shogun' Astilbe is a new variety full of contrast: it offers a magnificent almost black chocolate foliage in the middle of which delicate white inflorescences bloom in summer.

Originally from Japan, this hardy perennial forms a voluminous 50cm (20in) tall clump. It develops light foliage, divided into numerous cut leaflets, almost black chocolate. The tiny white flowers are grouped in feathery 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) long panicles that turn brown in winter. The flowering lasts from June to August.

Easy to grow, 'Chocolate Shogun' Astilbe thrives in rich, deep, consistently moist and fertile soil, preferably acidic, in a partly shady location. It can be forced by repotting the young plant in a mixture of garden soil and heather soil as soon as the first frost occurs. After a month, gradually raise the temperature while frequently watering.

'Chocolate Shogun' Astilbe is ideal for pond borders or in flower beds with hostas, ferns, and acidophilous bushes.

Planting and care

The 'Chocolate Shogun' Astilbe can be planted from October to April with an equal mix of garden soil and heather soil. Be careful, it will not thrive in clayey or calcareous soil. Water it in the summer to keep the substrate fresh and mulch with maritime pine bark. In October, when the foliage turns yellow, cut the stems down to ground level and divide the clump every 3 years. In April, mulch with compost.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune the faded flowers after flowering to promote better foliage development. The flowering stems can also be left in place if one wishes to decorate the garden during the winter season, simply removing them in the following spring by cutting back to 10cm (4in). It is important to avoid working the soil near these plants, as the rootstocks develop near the surface. These plants are resistant to diseases and are rarely attacked by insects. While slugs ignore them, they may be susceptible to powdery mildew and fungal spots.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to April
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
