Received young plants (end of October) are correct but of modest size: difficult to judge, only their recovery after the winter hazards in the coming spring will allow to verify if my choice has been judicious. Current review summer 2022.

Description

Astilbe Fanal develops paniculate plumes, composed of tiny red flowers. At the beginning of summer the inflorescences dry out in shades of brown and remain attractive throughout winter.

In a vase, the fresh flowers are superb, but they quickly wilt.

Plant in a moist and shady flowerbed, alongside other perennials. They like to be in woodland or by the water's edge.

Planting and care

To plant, work the soil well for 20 cm (8in) and place a base fertiliser at the bottom of the planting hole. Remove your plant from its pot and position by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in and water generously to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to aid rooting. Astilbes thrive in a marshy area in a sunny or semi-shady location. They do not tolerate chalky soil that dries out in summer. Spring frosts may damage the flowers and young leaves.

Care

Pruning instructions Trim the faded flowers to promote better foliage development. You can leave the flower stalks in place if you want to decorate the garden during winter, simply remove them the following spring by cutting them back to 10 cm (4in). It is important to avoid digging near these plants, as the rootstocks develop near the surface. These flowers are resistant to diseases and are rarely attacked by insects. While they are ignored by slugs, they can be susceptible to powdery mildew and fungal spots.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to April
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
