Description

Astilbe x crispa 'Perkeo' is a dwarf perennial with a mid-early flowering. From July, its dark purple-pink flowers, gathered in fine panicles, will brighten up the surroundings of water features, shady gardens, and wet areas of the garden. It also performs well in a large pot on the terrace, if kept moist. The crisp dark green foliage takes on lovely shades in autumn. Its feathery panicles remain attractive as cut flowers or in dried bouquets.

Astilbe crispa 'Perkeo' is a rhizomatous perennial plant, forming low and compact clumps of deciduous, dense and glossy compound foliage with deeply cut dark green leaflets from spring. It will reach 25 cm (10in) high in flower, spreading over 25 cm (10in). it is a long-lived plant belonging to the saxifragaceae family.

Plant Astilbe x crispa Perkeo in moist to wet, rich, neutral to acid soil. This hybrid does not tolerate drought. The plant will grow well in clay soils if they are healthy and fertile. Note that Astilbes do not tolerate being flooded in winter. Plant in partial shade or a non-scorching sunny position. in the wild, these plants grow in damp woodlands. Daily watering will be necessary in hot summers.

This Astilbe can easily be grown in a container, flower bed or shady rockery or planted as a border, used as cut flowers and dried flowers. Combine them with Hostas, Ferns (Athyrium filix-femina), Arums, Cape Fuchsia (Schizostylis coccinea), and Meadowsweet (Filipendula) or other wet soil perennials.

Planting and care

Astilbe crispa 'Perkeo' mainly thrives in partial shade. You can plant it in gentle sunlight, but avoid the hot midday hours. It is a trouble-free plant. Plant it in spring or autumn in cool, moist, well-drained, fertile soil, rich in organic matter. You can plant it in a marshy area. Do not plant it in limestone soil as it is susceptible to drying out. To plant your astilbe, work your soil to a depth of 20 cm (8in), breaking it up well and adding a base fertiliser such as bonemeal. Remove your plant from its pot and position it, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Then fill in and water generously to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to aid rooting. Astilbe requires very little maintenance, just keep the soil moist and add compost and fertiliser in spring. In winter you may need to protect the flowers and young foliage, which can be damaged by spring frosts. Cut the faded flower stems to highlight the foliage. In November, cut back the plants to about 10 cm (4in). Avoid digging near these plants, as the rootstocks develop near the surface. These plants are disease-resistant and rarely attacked by insects. While slugs ignore them, they may be prone to powdery mildew and fungal spots.
