Description

Astrantia major 'Pink Pride' is a new variety offering soft pink flowers that bloom from June to late September. They are borne at 60cm (24in) in height on stiff stems, giving it good weather resistance, which bouquet enthusiasts will appreciate.

This perennial has a bushy and very dense habit, with deciduous leaves that are lanceolate, lobed, toothed, green and strongly veined. The very stiff inflorescences are composed of dozens of small umbels of pale pink flowers crowned with bracts. They are borne at 60cm (24in) in height.

Easy to grow, Astrantia major 'Pink Pride' thrives in humus-bearing, moist and well-drained soil in a sunny or partly shaded location. It requires little maintenance. Cut back unsightly foliage before winter and remove faded flowers to encourage reblooming. It self-seeds easily. Beware of slugs and snails!

Astrantia 'Pink Pride' pairs perfectly with perennials and roses in any style of garden: modern, natural or romantic.

Tips: Combine multiple varieties to create a beautiful colour palette.

Planting and care

Astrantia 'Pink Pride' is planted in spring or autumn, at a rate of 5/m2 in a fresh, humus-bearing and well-drained soil in a sunny but not midday sun or semi-shaded position. Under these conditions, it easily self-seeds and flowers quickly. To install your bucket, work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), crumbling it well and adding a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil, fill in and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. In wet weather, keep slugs away, as young plants are vulnerable to them. How? With wood ash, anti-slug seeds or even with beer! Each of these solutions is very effective.
