On the other hand, the 3 astrantias are so small that I dare not plant them right away for fear that they will become a meal for slugs or that I will damage them while planting them. Can they wait in their small pots?

Description

Astrantia 'Star of Passion' is a highly floriferous new variety with delicate deep pink flowers. Appreciated for its long summer flowering, it is a very trendy perennial that fits well in any style of natural gardens.

This perennial has a bushy and very dense habit, with deciduous leaves with 5 lobes, lanceolate, dentate, green and strongly veined. The deep pink blooms are composed of dozens of small flowers with bracts. They are carried by stiff stems 60cm (24in) tall.

Easy to grow, Astrantia major 'Star of Passion' thrives in humus-rich, moist and well-drained soil in sunny or partially shaded locations. It requires little maintenance. Cut back the unsightly foliage before winter and remove faded flowers to encourage a second bloom. It self-seeds very easily. Watch out for slugs and snails!

Astrantia 'Star of Passion' pairs well with perennials and roses in any style of garden: modern, natural or romantic.

Tips: Combine several varieties to create a beautiful colour palette.

Planting and care

Astrantia 'Star of Passion' thrives in humus-rich, moist and well-drained soil in sunny, partially shaded, or even shady locations in warm climates. It requires little maintenance. Cut back the unsightly foliage before winter and remove faded flowers to encourage a second flowering. It self-seeds very easily, although not always reliably. Its only known enemies are slugs and snails.

Astrantia 'Star of Passion' should be planted in spring or autumn, at a rate of 5 plants per square meter. To plant your young plant, prepare your soil to a depth of 20 cm (8in) by breaking up the soil well and adding fertiliser such as bone meal.  Position your plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole, tamp down, and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root establishment. During wet weather, it is necessary to protect the young plants from slugs by using wood ash, slug repellent, or even beer! Each of these solutions is highly effective.
