Description
This close cousin of lupins, little known in Europe, has very robust stumps that allow it to live long in our gardens but establish slowly. Very tolerant in limestone soil, this large perennial appreciates light and well-drained soil and tolerates summer drought. A true all-terrain plant, the indigo lupin loves full sun and blooms abundantly in late spring. It is highly appreciated by florists across the Channel for its upright and well-held flowers.
The Baptisia 'Twilight Prairie Blues' is a fascinating variety, with upright spikes of dark violet almost black flowers with a thin yellow edge on the border. Its decorative bluish foliage and bushy habit justify a solitary position of the plant in the flower bed. Used in mixed borders or in wild flower beds, it pairs very well with Iris germanica 'Blushing Pink', Carex comans 'Milk Chocolate', or Euphorbia 'Black Bird'.

Planting and care
The cultivation of Baptisia Twilight Prairie Blues requires a little finesse to succeed smoothly:
Not very tolerant of limestone soils, this tall perennial appreciates light and well-draining soils, but tolerates summer drought.
In the first year of cultivation, the plant may seem to stagnate, which is normal. Young Baptisia plants have very slow growth, and their taproot is particularly fragile until it is deeply anchored in the soil. Make sure not to damage it during planting! Also, do not leave a young plant in its bucket for too long: the taproot could bend when reaching the bottom.
Optionally, add a small handful of phosphorus fertilizer (it stimulates root growth) and mix it with the soil during planting. Add 1/3 sand and 1/3 gravel to heavy soil to ensure good drainage, which is essential. Water moderately in the first year.
In the second or third year, the plant will be established, will not require any special care, and can flower profusely for many years!
Attention, voles also seem to be fond of its fleshy roots.
