Buphthalmum salicifolium Dora

Buphthalmum salicifolium Dora is a medium-sized perennial that is valuable for its cultivation in dry terrain and its generous yellow daisy-like flowering buds, which can be enjoyed in flower beds, containers, or pots.

The ox-eye daisy belongs to the Asteraceae family. This perennial acts as a pioneer as it is capable of growing in and flowering in the mountains of central Europe (Jura in France, northern Italy, and the Balkans), which are known for their challenging dry and rocky soil and extreme temperature variations with scorching heat and frosts below -15°C (5°F).

In addition to these remarkable and adaptabe qualities, this plant is a good size, reaching a height of around 60 cm (24in).

It serves as a fantastic accent plant thanks to its dense and bushy habit, supported by sturdy stems that eliminate the need for staking. Its elegant lanceolate and sometimes toothed foliage in matte green colour is accompanied by seemingly modest yellow flowers with multiple petals, which bloom in the middle of summer (June-July and August).

We recommend planting the ox-eye daisy in a sunny, preferably alkaline soil, even if it is dry. A light pruning of its flowers and damaged leaves will be appreciated at the beginning of autumn .

We advise you to associate it with smaller plants in terms of size and colour (pastel shades) to create a natural scene similar to its native habitat. Choose flowering plants that are fragrant and have complex foliage textures (velvety, thick, or fine), which share and thrive in the same growing conditions, to create carpets or groups of flowers. Some examples include erigerons, scabious, sedums, thymes, oreganos, and ballotes.
