Description

A hardy perennial for well-draining soil, Calamintha grandiflora blooms from June onwards, it is the only one in the genus to have such large tubular flowers.

This species forms upright bushes that reach a height of 40-50cm (16-20in) and slowly spread through suckers. The Calamintha grandiflora carries a multitude of tubular flowers in bright carmine-pink attracting bees and butterflies. Its tender green leaves, similar to those of mint and catnip, emit an aromatic fragrance.

Large-flowered catmint is easy to grow and thrives in sunny locations with light, moist, and well-draining soil, but it dislikes compact soils, wet in winter.

It can be used in various ways, either as a standalone plant, to border a path or walkway, to fill the base of bush roses, or in wild-looking flower beds alongside Stipa tenuissima, Stachys bizanthina, bronze fennel, and Achillea Apfelblute.

Planting and care

A true all-terrain plant, Calamintha grandiflora grows in the sun in light, poor and stony soils. It appreciates moist soils but adapts to summer drought by reducing its flowering. In heavy soils, dig a hole 3 times larger than the volume of the pot and mix your topsoil with 1/3 gravel and 1/3 sand to lighten the soil and avoiding water-logging in winter.
