Description
Campanula glomerata var. acaulis is an excellent perennial, forming a beautiful clump of foliage and vigorous and floriferous in moist soil. It is adorned in summer with violet-blue bell-shaped flowers gathered in dense and round clusters and carried by very short and robust stems. Perfect in rock gardens and along borders, it is also a very beautiful flower for bouquets.

The bellflower is a herbaceous perennial plant with a rhizomatous root system, native to Europe and temperate Asia belonging to the campanulaceae family. It is a fairly low plant, reaching about 20 to 30 cm in height when flowering, with a spread of 40 cm (16in), forming stolons and eventually large clumps of dark green, rough leaves which are heart-shaped at the base of the plant and more elongated at the base of the flowering stems. Flowering occurs in June-July, in the form of spherical terminal clusters composed of star-shaped bell flowers, 2 to 3 cm (1in) wide, a fairly deep lilac-blue colour, gathered in a cyme sometimes containing 15 flowers open towards the sky. This flowering can last two months if you regularly remove the faded flower stalks, and can even reoccur at the end of summer.

Campanula glomerata Acaulis is easy to grow in any light, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. It can be used in borders, paving, or a large rock garden along with small asters, veronicas, or perennial geraniums. It also pairs well with roses and summer-flowering shrubs such as deutzias, althaeas, or mock oranges, which it dresses the base of.

Planting and care
Hardy well below -15°C (5°F), Campanula glomerata 'Acaulis' thrives in slightly sunny or semi-shaded situations. The further south you go, the more it will need afternoon shade. Plant it from March to May and from September to November in ordinary, neutral or slightly chalky, loose and moist soil. Regularly remove faded flowers in summer and prune after flowering to encourage the plant to produce new foliage. Don't rely on the size of the plant in the pot staying the same: give it the space you would give to a small bush. You can divide the clumps in autumn and spring. In pots, apply organic fertilizer at least once a year.
