Description

Campanula lactiflora 'White Pouffe' is a compact and bushy variety of milky bellflower, offering a profusion of small white star-shaped flowers, capable of blooming from June to October. Spectacular despite its modest size, this very hardy perennial plant is truly undemanding and easy to grow in full sun, or partial shade in hot climates, in ordinary soil, even limestone, but loose, well-drained, and moist in summer.

Native to eastern Turkey and the Caucasus, the Milky Bellflower is a tall herbaceous perennial plant of the campanula family. The 'White Pouffe' variety is mainly distinguished by a more modest growth and a much more compact bushy habit. It rapidly develops into a clump of leafy stems as wide as it is tall, reaching approximately 45 cm (18in) in all directions. It blooms for a long period, throughout summer, if you regularly remove faded flower stems. Its sturdy upright stems form compound panicles of 1 to 3 cm (1in) diameter flowers, milky white with bluish highlights when backlit. The flowers are widely open, star-shaped bells with 5 petals. The foliage consists of long, slender, oblong and toothed, medium green leaves.

The 'White Pouffe' Bellflower, the snowy alter ego of 'Blue Pouffe', is an excellent fast-growing perennial plant that will work well in flower beds or borders. It is an ideal companion for all roses, from natural ones to the most sophisticated ones. It also pairs well with annual poppies with pastel pompoms or orange-pink coneflowers, pink astilbes, perennial geraniums, and bergenia. Its flowers and sturdy stems will fit perfectly in all summer bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant your campanula in full sun, or partial shade in a warm climate, in rich and moist, deeply dug soil. Don't rely on the size of the young plant remaining the same: give it the space you would give to a small bush, as it grows very quickly! You can prune the stems at the end of the flowering period to encourage the emergence of new flowers on lateral shoots. Staking is not necessary. You can divide the clumps in autumn and spring. In pots, apply organic fertilizer at least once a year.
