Description

Campanula persicifolia 'La Bello', commonly known as Peach-leaved Bellflower, is a perennial plant that has beautiful rosettes of semi-evergreen dark green leaves, and double, white flowers that bloom from June to August.

Of horticultural origin, the Campanula La Bello is a perennial plant that forms stiff stems measuring 60 to 80 centimetres (24 to 32 inches) high and 30 centimetres (12 inches) wide. The large bell-shaped flowers are double and white with fine blue edges, blooming from June to August. The flowers grow on upright stems during a long summer flowering period that produces bouquet-like flowers. Its semi-evergreen foliage is dark green with elongated leaves resembling peach leaves, hence its name.

Campanula persicifolia 'La Bello' withstands temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) and thrives in sunny or semi-shady positions. Plant it from March to May and from September to November in ordinary, humus-bearing moist soil. Transfer to a pot in autumn to protect it from winter frost. Remove faded flower stalks to encourage new growth. Do not be fooled by the size of the plant in the pot: give it the space you would give to a small bush. You can divide the clumps in autumn and spring. In containers, apply organic fertilizer at least once a year.

To use as ground cover, plant 6/m². It can also be used in borders or rock gardens. Combine it with ladies' mantle, Delphinium 'Galahad', ptarmica yarrow 'Perry's White', 'Ivorine' aconite in a white garden, add a touch of grey with ludoviciana artemisia or Stachys byzantina, and enjoy the show.

Planting and care

Evergreen down to -15°C (5°F) (Zone 6 and 7), Campanula persicifolia 'La Bello' thrives in sunny or semi-shaded positions. Plant it from March to May and from September to November in ordinary, humus-bearing, moist soil. Pot it in autumn to protect it from winter frost. Prune it after flowering to cut back the faded flower stems and encourage new growth. Don't be fooled by the size of the young plant in the pot: give it the space you would give to a small bush. In windy locations, staking may be necessary. You can divide the clumps in autumn and spring. In containers, apply organic fertilizer at least once a year.
