Collection items (4 plants)

Description

This collection brings together 4 varieties of rockery bellflowers offering small star-shaped bell flowers in blue, mauve, or white, depending on the plants. These small creeping perennials that spread over time are ideal for decorating borders, walls, and rocky areas. They are hardy and easy to grow in well-drained soil. Their flowering period extends from late spring to early autumn, and the foliage partially persists in winter.

The collection consists of 4 plants:

- x 1 Wall Bellflower - Campanula portenschlagiana: a vigorous species, very floriferous, with bright blue-mauve flowers in June-July, and again in late summer.

- x 1  Carpathian Bellflower - Campanula carpatica: abundant small light blue bell flowers between June and August

- x 1 Serbian Bellflower E.H. Frost  - Campanula poscharskyana: numerous small white star-shaped flowers on light green foliage from June to September

- x 1 Harebell - Campanula rotundifolia: taller, this wild species blooms from June to November, depending on the region. Its slender flower stems bear several single, pendulous, lavender-blue bells.

 Individually labelled.

These bellflowers are excellent ground covers, perfect for filling the spaces between rocks in a rock garden. They quickly colonize cracks in paving, old walls, and moderately dry walls. They also fit perfectly in a wild garden. They can also be admired in pots and hanging baskets, where they will cascade in small bright drapes.

Planting and care

Rockery bellflowers appreciate slightly moist but not-too-dry soil in summer, light and even chalky, but hate stagnant moisture that causes their roots to rot. They require perfectly drained but slightly moist soil to thrive. You can plant it in non-burning sun, or in partial shade, sheltered from strong winds that dry it out. This mountainous plant does not appreciate climates that are too hot or summers that are too dry. Beware of attacks by slugs and snails in spring. They can destroy a young plant that is not yet well established. Use non-toxic baits for our furry or prickly companions... or adopt hedgehogs and toads that are also fond of slugs and snails!
